Top grocery stores at which consumers regularly shop in Canada 2019

According to a survey carried out in August 2019 by ProdegeMR, some 49.7 of Canadian respondents said that they shop regularly at Walmart for food and beverage products. Real Canadian Superstore and Costco were also popular shopping destinations, with 35.66 and 34.57 percent of respondents regularly visiting these stores respectively.

Walmart origins

Walmart, formerly known as Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., is one of the world’s largest retail companies, with total global revenue amounting to 514.41 billion U.S. dollars in 2019. The first Walmart store was opened in Rogers, Arkansas by Sam Walton in 1962. The company went public in 1970 as it continued to expand. With store growth came new store formats – the first Sam’s Club opened in 1983 and the first Walmart Supercenter in 1988. The company went on to expand into Central and South America, Canada, China, South Africa and the United Kingdom.

The number of Walmart retail stores in Canada hit an all-time high of 411 in 2019. Canadian Walmart in-store net sales were the fourth highest of all countries in 2017, reaching around 20.5 billion U.S. dollars. In contrast, U.S. in-store net sales amounted to around 346.3 billion in the same year.
